Did you know that the main doors of the Lateran Basilica are over 2000 years old? They originally belonged to the home of the Roman Imperial Senate- the Church has been recycling for a long time!
The Lateran Basilica is the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. It is the official seat of the Pope. The only ‘archbasilica’ in the world and it is officially called: Major Papal Patriarchal’ and ‘Roman Archbasilica,’ ‘Metropolitan and Primatial Cathedral of the Most Holy Saviour and Sts. John the Baptist and the Evangelist in Lateran, Mother and Head of All Churches in Rome and in the World. ‘The origin of the Basilica dates back to Pope Sylvester I who presided over the official dedication in 324.We celebrate todays feast not to commemorate a beautiful building, but rather to remember what it means to be Catholic. As we celebrate we remember that you and I by virtue of our baptism are members of the Mystical Body called the Church, unified in faith and joined in communion with the Lord and each other, through our participation in the Eucharist. -
